Seven Polish nationals arrested in connection with the violent nationwide protests against economic hardship in Kano State are currently under investigation, according to the Department of State Services (DSS). This information was shared by a DSS representative during a meeting with the diplomatic corps, which was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tugar, on Wednesday.
The DSS representative explained that the Polish nationals were detained due to their display of foreign flags in the North-West region, he emphasized that their arrest was part of a broader investigation and reassured that it was not a deliberate targeting of Polish citizens.
The meeting, which included the Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, a representative from the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, was convened in response to the nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tugar started his address by outlining the Federal Government’s efforts to boost socioeconomic development, highlighting reductions in debt servicing from 90% to 68%, and other initiatives aimed at improving food security, creating jobs, and attracting investments.
Ambassador Tugar expressed concern over negative narratives on social media that threaten national peace and stability. He assured that the Federal Government is committed to safeguarding both the diplomatic community and Nigerian citizens in accordance with international law. He also warned that anyone found guilty of funding the protests, whether domestically or internationally, would face severe consequences.
