American Gabby Thomas secured a stunning victory in the women’s 200m at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, earning her first major title. Thomas crossed the finish line in 21.83 seconds, outpacing St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred, the new 100m champion, who finished in 22.08 seconds. Thomas’ teammate, Brittany Brown, took bronze with a time of 22.20 seconds.
At 27, Thomas, a bronze medalist from the Tokyo Games, becomes the first American woman to win an Olympic short sprint title since Allyson Felix’s 200m win in London in 2012. Nigeria’s Favour Ofili, who reached the final despite missing the 100m due to administrative issues, finished sixth in the race.
