Immigration Officer Suspended for Begging Money on Duty at Lagos Airport

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an officer indefinitely following a viral video showing him soliciting money from a traveler at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI 2), Okpravero C. Ufuoma, was filmed by a traveler using camera-enabled eyeglasses while on duty, asking for financial help.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Comptroller General Kemi Nana Nandap, the NIS denounced Ufuoma's actions as disgraceful and contrary to the service's reform efforts aimed at improving integrity and professionalism.

The statement emphasized that Ufuoma’s behavior does not align with the NIS’s values of professionalism and hospitality. He has been suspended pending further disciplinary action in line with legal and Public Service Rules.

To address and prevent similar issues, electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all five international airports in Nigeria to enhance passenger experience and curb misconduct.
