"Lagos Protester’s Son Receives N1.8m in Donations for Programming Career"
Ogwu Chijioke was among the numerous protesters in Lagos who took to the streets on Thursday as part of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations against Nigeria's severe economic conditions. In an interview with Channels Television at the Lekki Toll Gate, Chijioke shared his personal struggle in supporting his son's ambition to become a programmer. “I commute from Mile 2 to Festac, and while my
13-year-old son is already programming, I can’t afford data for his learning or the millions of naira needed for his tuition,” he said, holding his bicycle. “My name is Ogwu Benjamin Chijioke, I’d rather die protesting on the streets than stay at home and watch my son's potential go to waste. I may not have much of a future in Nigeria, but I refuse to let my son's future be ruined.”
Soon after, Chijioke's video went viral.
“You can feel the passion in his soul,” social media influencer Morris Monye wrote in a caption on his X handle. “He’s lost hope for himself but still believes in his son's future. This is why he’s protesting.”
Hours later, Monye updated his followers: “I've got his details. N1.8m is needed to make his dreams come true.” In less than 24 hours, the crowdfunding goal was achieved.
“N1.8m raised. The funds are complete. This crowdfunding is now closed,” Monye announced. “Thank you all for your generosity.
