A motion by legislator Obi Aguocha for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has been supported by 180 members of the minority caucus in the 10th House of Representatives. Aguocha, representing the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, announced this during a caucus meeting on Monday.
He called on his fellow lawmakers to take a clear stance on the matter involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and to consider a political resolution to the issue. The influential caucus's endorsement follows Aguocha’s recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as his successful efforts to rally 50 colleagues from various parties and the southeast caucus of the National Assembly.
In his speech, Aguocha underscored the necessity of a cohesive approach within the minority caucus, stressing that resolving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s situation is vital for national peace, stability, and unity. He urged for immediate and strategic discussions with key stakeholders to push for a peaceful and political solution to the issue, which holds significant consequences for Nigeria's socio-political landscape.
The caucus backing Aguocha’s motion includes all members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, the Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.
