Akpabio addressed attendees at an event held by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Tuesday in Rivers state. A nationwide demonstration has been scheduled for August to protest the soaring inflation and Nigeria's most severe cost of living crisis in decades. Some leaders within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and several politicians from the south-west view the upcoming protest as an attempt to undermine the Bola Tinubu administration.
He assured that the National Assembly is prepared to support legislation aimed at reducing oil spillage and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta.
“The specific issues affecting the Niger Delta should be included in the communiqué, which we will present to the President,” Akpabio said. “Matters requiring legislation will be addressed by us, those needing intervention will go to the NDDC, and issues needing additional funding will be directed to the President and Commander-in-Chief. I assure you that these concerns will be addressed.”
