THE NIGER COUP: ECOWAS PRIORITIES DIPLOMACY


The Economic Community Of West African States ECOWAS is a political, social and economic blog of West African States. Established in May 28,1975 has been in the front line of promoting peace, security and economic stability in West African.

Niger being a member of ECOWAS, has been under a severe security threat resulting from the ongoing coup orchestrated by the former presidential guard chief General Abdourahamane Tchiani who has outed legitimate government of president Mohammed Bazoum.

ECOWAS governing body has threatened a severe military intervention to reinstate the outed president if the coup plotter refutes the ultimatum issued by ECOWAS.

During a security talk of the ECOWAS security council, the chief of defense staff of ECOWAS brought to prism illuminating that the Economic Community of West African States is not known for coup and will never recognize an illegitimate Government, maintaining that ECOWAS is known for democracy and for democracy ECOWAS would stand. pointing to this he maintained that war would be the last resort to reinstating the deposed President.

Speaking at the meeting, the commissioner for political affairs of Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS, Alhaji Fatah Musah, addressed that the regional bloc is ready to employ measures, dialoguing through diplomacy in seeing to the end of the coup in the Republic of Niger.
