Following
the ongoing screening and confirmations of ministerial nominees, Nigerians and
stakeholders in the education sector are expecting to have a transformational
leader who will work toward alleviating the decayed educational system of the
country.
With
an increase in the out- of school children rising to 20million, according to
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),
poor funding, dilapidated infrastructure, quality learning materials are those
concern reasons why the educational sector needs to be intervened, calling on
the government to assign the ministry to a more credible individual that would
help pilot the face of the educational sector.
The
stakeholders stressed the need for a competent candidate with a genuine passion
and a good track record. According to the stakeholders, the new minister must
be ready to come up with concrete measures, tackling the problems of out of
school children, ensuring that every child have access to quality Education
irrespective of class or background and the issue of teacher training and
welfare should be prioritized.
The
National President of the Union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, recommended that the
new minister should posse charisma so to command influence. Also speaking was
the founder of Ivy Gems School Mrs. Agnes Johnson, who called on the president
to appoint an educationist and not a politician, maintaining that.
