Onyeka Onwenu, a former member of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN), passed away last Tuesday following a performance at a birthday party. In a meeting with MCSN delegates led by Chairman Orits Wiliki, Onwenu's sons, Abram and Tijani, revealed their plans to honor their mother's wish for a swift and private burial.
Details of the burial arrangements will be announced soon. King Sunny Ade deeply moved, penned a heartfelt tribute in the condolence register: “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.”
In a 2021 opinion piece for Premium Times, Onwenu had expressed her desire for a simple and understated farewell: “Do it quickly, quietly, and privately. Mourn, yes, but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh.”
