The Nigerien
military last week overthrew the democratically elected government of president
Mohammed Bazoum which has been condemns by Nigeria, ECOWAS, US, France and
other world governments.
Following the
condemnation, resolutions were passed by the regional bloc ECOWAS which
includes military intervention.
President
Tinubu, in compliance to the resolution, wrote to the Senate to enable Nigeria
intervene to restore democracy in Niger Republic.
The letter
which was read during the plenary by president of the Senate Godswill Akpabio
read that Nigeria in compliance to the resolutions of ECOWAS Will undertake
military buildup, deployment of military personnel for intervention if the coup
plotters remain recalcitrant.
Some of the
resolutions reached at the ECOWAS meeting are, cutting off electricity supply
from the Republic of Niger, preventing the operations of commercial and special
flights to and from Niger, and blockade of road transit etc.
However, this
resolutions and sanctions by ECOWAS has raised multifaceted concerns and
opinions as on the floor of the upper chamber, senators reacted declining the
president Tinubu permission to embarking on military intervention in the
Republic of Niger.
However, the
Senate has denied the content of the letter from president Tinubu which was
read during plenary on Friday.
